Guggenheim Museum New York - few details

The normal view of the museum is clean modernist. But this amazing building has some interesting details show to as how complicated was the world of architecture at the time, when this building was created.

Almost impossible to see this playful basement, only if you standing very close to the building. No doubt this detail came from the previouse era, from ar-deco style.

Unlike a lot of very popular views from the opposite side of the street, where you can see the whole idea of the building, here the letters of the name of the museum seem very important for understanding through font and grafic design.

The glass roof covering the atrium also looks alien to the main idea. Looks like something very great and important came to architect's mind, the great idea of spiral volume has been created, but few things stay away of his attention.

Hand made handrails without any industrial details. They have made this form at the site for sure.

I was lucky to see this emptiness of galeries, main exposition was in the atrium at the moment. These complicated intersections of walls, ceilings and shelves could say to me more and more about Frank Loyd Wright, famouse and unknown.

And finally this gold sink for drinking water. Same things exist at each floor. Really "say hello!" for glamorous richness from 20-ths.

The first picture shows my first morning in America. becouse of difference of timezones I wake up at 5 o'clock and just wait the moment when the morning light is enough for my first picture.

My first visit I could not help to visit this building. This is the icon, for sure. But the view from it's top is also iconic. Cloudy weather just helps to realise the vertical scale of Manhattan. Yes, it is my personal reflection, I know. A lot of pictures have been made from this position. And different directions of view round about give you almost the same view - chaos of buildings without any order. Propellers by aircondition on the roofs. The mix of building technologies. Easy to imagine the storm of pollutions from this city. Different principles of buildings, different egos. This American dream has been born and built before the crisis. What is the next step of American building industry.

The piece of architecture

German based architectural bureau Bruckner & Brucner started their practice with small nice pavilion installed far from any habitation in the east part of Bavaria near Tirshenreuth. Actually, nowadays this company still keeps this style very clear. But this one of the first experience, many years ago, still looks innovative and full of inventions. I can not find the info, but as I have been explained by friends, they built this shelter as diploma project for their own money and at the land where they had have private agreement with the owner.

This is black hall in Malpenca aeroport in Milano, Italy. This space suddenly appears on the way from Terminal 1 to railway station. It's stunning design looks perfect in contrast to the entire old fashion style of aeroport buildings. Completely up to date even including smoke (first time active smoke for interiors have appeared on last Venice Bienalle). It is good idea to present Milano to arrivals through such sophisticated interior.

Normally, when Serpentine gallery invites some architects to build annual pavilion in Kensington garden, itmeans it should be like manifesto. But what if every regular building of the architect already is the manifesto?

After last year announcement that Piter Zumtor is the author of 2011's Serpentine pavilion, everyone was intrigued just because Zumtor's work is always concrete, stone, something strong... Will this temporary pavilion also be build from concrete?... How it could be removed next year?

Black parallelepiped sits in Serpentine garden both as Cubric's monolith and Malevich's "Black square". It's a little bit complicated to see any system or proportional order in height, length and width of this building or catch any rhythm in door openings. It has been drawn intuitively for sure and looks completely harmonically. Thanks to four dimentions pitched roof inclined inside, the small yard with Alps flower is always sunny and full of people. A lot of seniors citizens spend hours in there taking the cup of coffee or watching the yard. This is amazing, how Zumtor creates this shining atmosphere inside the totally black.

Little black dress should contain a women inside to be alive... Women are like flowers, this pavilion has the soul, the garden inside, the architecture.

The basement of this plot of land is very strong, this is cliff. Next step for these drawings we will organize the road at the right side of plot...

I still don't like the combination of this form of the house and pool.

Final assembling at the exhibition area. We are very care about visitors behavior...

Everybody tries touch this model:)))...

By the way, you can see few suspenders above the structure... actually this is reinforcement of these partition-walls, these suspenders NOT belongs to our model.

Our model is completely cantilevered and has only one joint with the wall for each part.

Of course, we tested this structure before... and we've seen it is strong enough!

Chaotic structure wich has two opposite movements, like two waves.

Arch Moscow 2011 run-up the model

Yesterday we erected first part of the model for Arch Moscow 2011,

annual architectural exhibition in Moscow, Russia.

But few days ago we have started reserch with something very simple.

This pretty small pink guinea pig is part of cantilever test.

It has a weight... Actually just a little... but enough....

At least last three days this suspended structure on the wall above our heads is still OK...:)

Initially we thought it should be vertical....

Just for fun we have rotated it horisontal and we like it....

Zaha Hadid MAXXI museum details...

This is second time I visited this site. Mostly I was attracted by details... Small, sometimes invisible things but important for real construction. My external overview describes few level-top professional solutions for compression joints. It is always important for such a big concrete building.
Two pictures below are just to refresh a look.

Entrance area... very complicated bottom of suspended galleries... Glass doors at the left side are indicate the entrance.

Connection to the exicting listed building - old-time barak.

Cool selection of materials... Also I like hinges...

Just concrete surface... It usually has this pattern of flows.

What is realy interesting for me is a quantity of compression joints used for this building.
First of them you can see bellow between curved passage directed to the right side and triangular part of ceiling at the left side.

You can see few tops covering some important points of this compression joint.

Next compression joint is 3-dimentional. It starts in low left corner of the picture exactly left side of the garbage bin, goes up to the suspended gallery and turns right rounding the window... take attention NO compression joint above the turn...

Here, two another compression joints obviosly are seen. First is in the corner connection of suspended gallery... Second one is on the left vertical wall and has Z-shape.

I like this view very much...:)

Behind the metal it could be metal or wooden structure... but when outside surface looks like concrete it means entire structure is concrete...

The scar was apparently caused by a boat accident: a small boat hit Corb while he was swimming and he got badly cut by the propeller.

Leolux itself is the most attractive stand every year of exhibition.... Someone created it few moments after cofeshop visiting I think:))).... Fantasticaly "Avatar" like real size mushrooms... Brightest neon leather's colors for firniture samples.... Non-regular forms for armchairs, side-tables, sofas and so... Always crowdy here (these pictures made in staff time, you can meet Piter Maly here this evening) and always you can find to see something interesting....

Slowly wandering trough rows of stands I checked almost all famous brands... Actualy if they change color of leather wraping for furniture or just invented new side-table I can not say someone created collection... A lot of brands did like this... and they hopefully see to visitors awaiting for interest and approval. A lot of top managers normally there.... meetings and discussions... What are they discuss if they had nothing done before?
And finaly I found not so crowdy place with realy nice and stylish, exactly architecturaly looks like collection. The best one is "Ora Gamy" by Ora Ito. If you are the fun of "Star wars", me - fun, this chair is you must have:)))..... or you should convince your client by this... or you can disign house where this chair is to the point.... If you like this. I like.

Patient still alive.... not die indeed.... To my opinion, only one reason exists for visiting Cologne - to see how in crisis time everything is going on. And compare to last year. Last year exhibitions was exactly like funeral for our hopes about the market. All producers went down. Furniture itsellf was gray, boring and honesty old-fashion... From last collections I mean. Fear was main idea for market representatives.
Not now.... They wake up. Color, gold and playfull forms. Intriguing eyes behind reception decks.
They can do something and they realy do....

It's another type of basement... There is the pool exactly under three supported points of the house.
It will be nice shadow by those cantilevers on the water in hot days. And water makes additional lightings on the bottom of the house from pool's surface. The goal is house looks like flies above the pool.

Shanghai Expo 2010 - Danish pavilion - movement...

This building is not about the country, it is about movement...
When you ride on bycircle trough this ribbon, you fill samething about the country more exactly then you see pictures and diagrams... I went up with plasure along this serpentine space and saw nothing outside because these small holes. So, this path is the 3-D diagram.
Croud goes to the upper point hope to see main think in the pavilion, but finally can see just the site around... The suspended structure without a subject inside much more attractive and looks like simple white model which is the subject itself...

Shanghai Expo 2010 - UK pavilion - Dandelion...

It is smallest building among all Shanghai pavilions this year. It not takes all area of UK plot. It has almost nothing inside. It is invisible behind the fance. And actually it is not a building at all... But long time before opening the Expo it was most famous pavilion, and after opening became most attractive. The queueing time is three hours, it means 180 minutes... have you ever been in three hours queue? Can you imagine samething just to see it you can stay so long time? Maybe tank of water in desert... Or touch Pope...
But here is just dandelion on envelope.
The answer is that never before you see building without walls, roof and even basement. Building without surface. Without definite shape and even volume. No windows, no columnes, beams and frames. Just the cloud reminds building...
Unlike other small and huge pavilions on Expo it has a lot of free space in front of itself allow stay calm and relax beyond the croud, even lying on inclined floor, and see it as you see on flame or river... Because those plastic horns are living themown live depends on wind...
It made very simple way... nothing special... plywood, 60 thousends pvc-horns, leads, water and stones...
Real iconic building:) The price is 25 millions pound.
The author is Thomas Heatherwick, I'm afraid he even not understand what a new typologe he made.

2010 La Biennale di Venezia

My first and most important impression by this year Biennale is Rem Kolhas. I see him, I look at him, and it seems to me, even watching him you become smart:)))... and understand more about architecture. You understand love architecture inside yourself but not you in architecture. I just had opportunity shake his hands and say my congratulations to Old Dragon of modern architecture! Gold Lion was given him on this Biennale.

On these pictures Rem Kolhas in cofeshop together with his team (I think), and on the presentation his stand.

When someone ask me what to see first, my opinion is - Australian pavilion. It is the best one! Not this black and red cabine, but what you can see inside and what I can not make a picture. There is the movie with huge urbanism forecast... You should see it, they put a lot of unexpected thought about future of us, they did a lot of work for this film, still not possible buy it on DVD, so, you should buy a ticket, fly to Venice and see it:)))

Second one I recomend for immediately visit is Chechoslovacia pavilion, because of this nice and very precision work for a lot of units in uptodate ecological wooden style. These very delicate models takes your attention for long time thanks to it mastership.

And what I even could not imagine to see in reality is those spider web like models in Canadian pavilion. Those crazy gays made it not in 3D virtual world but as real objects you can touch and fill... And next point - it moves... All these models are alive, breathe and all this composition will surprise you very much, I'm insure...

Mercedes-Benz museum Stutgart

First time I saw so clearly that look of building so much depends on basic idea. This building depends on idea by Mersedes cars. These cars often are like sofa... camfortable and without passion. So and this museum. Perfect in constraction, but too static in impressions... It has a lot of nice joints and details, but does not has one-piece movement.

Calatrava brige in Venice

Venice not accepts something new, really... I expected to see fresh and glamorous brand looks bridge by Calatrava as new pearl of Venice, piece of new age near the gate to ancient town. But just a few days it was opened, it again with scaffolds, dusted and dirty. I can't make pictures from some sides because of crowds of wast near it's stands... Bridge has a lot of fine details, made very accuracy and carefully, except of welding of subconstractions. So, my impressions confused... Not so clear... But it is Calatrava! Help to my mind!:)

Second Milano exhibition dyring economy crises... Last one was the test for first shock of furniture makers, all of them asked each other about forecast for finish bad economy situation. And just await good news.

This year all understand that it is for long time... And try adapt for these problems. Adapt in very different ways. I look for evidence of future progress on stends of real newsmakers, as I am used to think about Cor & Interlubke, for example.

First horrible news about Interlubke I'v seen on last exhibition in Colone. It was new line of cheap furniture. Those white multyrestangular case, you can see it on background of fourth picture, made in very cheap and poor style, but, I don't know why, in Colone Interlubke installed it as the first to entrance. Doors of it not latch, shelves was broken, and white painting is third rate quality. Actually, I can not imagine my common clients for Interlubke furniture, who can buy this case. And when this company make first step to low qualiti market, it can lose common clients, unfortunately...

Next weakly effort of big companes save profit is making the step to bed taste market, glamorous and art-deko furniture. I never, never can imagine Cor leather furniture in gold color! To my mind, Cor was allways island of good teste. It was proud have piece of Cor furniture in a house or in a project. It was espesial furniture for supercool interiours from concrete and glass, clear minimalism. And now we see fully gold armchear...

Only one low and long case with inoxcolor drawers still remind glorious past of these companes.

In the middle of the March I try visit MAXXI museum in Roma, just to see it outside and make some fotos of the building. First of all I was surprised after strong fence around museum area... Construction works was finished on the site, I heared it from media, and I hope spend a time seeing detailes. But it is not possible now... Only VIP persons may walk inside this fence and all others are second kind of people... So... To have a secret is the best way to be famous.

This is the model of future skyscraper. It is not block of flats, actualy, it is block of houses. Every one thing of this building is realy separate house, made in it's own style. One of them is poor, next one is gold, another one is in ancient style. It has enough space for wind of fresh area, gardens on each levels or cuple of trees. This idea copy traditional russian house built from logs. But in this model log construction rises to clouds.

This year it was smaller and simple. Big brands surprised nothing. Most often question is, are they still alive and sound? But has not strong concepts and fresh ideas. Owners see to visitors woeful eyes and stay proud being there, sometimes presenting empty space.

_ Lago Maggiore first look of the site and first ideas

The site situated far deep in mountains, far of Lago, 700 m. above sea-level, and 500 m. above the lake. But it has nice view directly to Lago Maggiore, in this moment it is cloudy. All area built on rural tradition houses, but out of the 300 m. area around the lake possible to build exactly what you whant. Any style and any design. So, becouse of our first impressions of this site, idea of water flows goes from top of the mountain, appear. Big rock on the site allow us create something with suspended parts. In consort with Anna Sokolova.

Parthenon rebuilding overlook

I was forty when I first time seen Parthenon in live. I was surprised, it is under reconctruction. Since 1975... Big kran still stands inside the temple, marble block das't has order and stored everywhere around... In ancient time it was build in ten years, without mashins, kran, computers and historikal investigations, of course. I guess it is to slow and endless. But Parthenon is allways perfect, in spite of condition, thanks to Iktinos and Kallikrates.

Small hotel building re-erecting - project Volga

It was 2 stored old white bricks hotel. The idea not only about re-erecting of original building, but change it's image fully, make it fashionable and attractive. First floor consist of suits, second - of two big luxury apartments. We used metal structure for upper floor, and moved arched line of windows forward in reason to add gross floor. Flat roof has structural addition for partes and so on.

4 Summerhouses from wood, steel and concrete - project Volga

Thanks to client we had capability to realise same ideas about variations of parts and joints from basic work matireals. Because of perfect engineering design we hope receive good small buildings... But... Not yet good quality of building process, especially about concrete. We doing better next time, of course.

2009 Milan exhibition

Before next 2010 Milan exhibition I just would like to remind how it was last time. Besides furniture, architecture of stends was very attractiv. Bicause it first, you see, when you walk in front of exponents. Sometimes it has realy fresh design. Perhaps, this stends idea very appropriate for smoll house project:) Anyways, it's never boring.

Massimiliano Fuksas - Fiera Milano International

First time I heard in detail about this project in Moscow, at Fuksas's lecture about his works. He explained about scale of this complex, about morphology of huge glass river between pavilions. That, every triangular glass piece has his own mesurment and absultely individualy. He sayd great thanks for italian labours, who help him carefully assemble every piece. All of us, who was on this lecture, was under his aura of professionalism and creation.

My other impressions from late Biennale: it is stends, people and how people contact to exibition... Actualy, and Venice is place of contrasts, like this white pantalonas behind extrimly item in Chinese area on first foto... I try reflect feeling of Biennale...

This glass wall was designed as finished part of kitchen area, with absolutly cool SieMatic equipment. In same time it is wall between entrance area and kitchen. It is the first element of design, and so, it presents style and technic solutions for this appartment.

How is life of gigantic concrete platform, whit the name La Defense, today? Till this time nothing more interesting Grand Arch exists there. End of big city axis is actualy most interesting center of architectural ideas combines scale, impressions, technological solutions and detailes. Cubic form of arch repits in maltiple sqware windows, two of gemetric pilons confront to buterfly wings of two tents... Using of ancent style white carrara marble together with naked joints is too surprised also...

I was lucky to see this temporary building by last monster of deconstructivism. Naked geometric style inside old Green park stays naturally like tree... I could spend hours sitting on big steps under this huge wood-and-glass leaves, seeing sun and clouds. Row materials columnes has not finished surfaces and gaps, and remindes me wood detales in grandfather's house. Most amazingly, it is to the point.

It is first time, when we saw part of our digital project embodied on site. We fill proud little bit:)... We are on the right way. Small mistakes are occure, but in total - unbelivable complicated design was born. We investigated all problems, we understud all deficults, and fill of entysiasm completle finish exactly by project.

Everything clear... We finished gipsum, plaster, marble, painting, pipes and electrisity... All details, should be installed, was made in Germany, by perfect furniture making company Brunold, in Bavaria. The moment of truth is coming. Do we have probability fix and assamble subconstractions and final glass panels exectly by measurements with only milimeter gaps?...

Richard Rogers Partnership - Barajas aeroport Madrid

All year, from autumn 2007 to september 2008, incredible Barajas was my own gate to my site in Malaga. No directly flights from Moscow to Malaga at winter time, so, I allways did this way: foor floors down, train, foor floors up, long walk with multicolor columnes above... All joints are opened, all ideas are cleared... Huge scale of thinking not only in horisontal, but n vertical too. And next flight to my interiors millimetres!
